Building Sites and Children – KEEP OUT!!

In my village at the moment, there are 3 construction sites for new housing, both near schools & childrens play areas. Taking away my thoughts about the effect on local infrastructure with these housing projects., it made me think about the security & Health and Safety of residents – in particular children.
The attraction of machinery, ladders, piles of soil, building work etc is very attractive to children, but also to adults who maybe have ideas of seeing what they can take away.
Security is obviously key, with sufficient preventative measures to stop access to construction sites. Although adults can read the notices, children may not be able to. Therefore it is vital that security is tight enough and checked regularly, to prevent the possibility of accidents, which could be fatal.
The HSE published very useful guidance, HSG151, which goes into great detail about Construction Site Safety, and the additional deterrents that could be useful.
Kids will be kids, I did it when I was a young lad, didn’t see the dangers, but lived to tell the tale. Others have not been as lucky.
